Top 10 Packing Tips
There's no dodging the fact that moving all of your belongings is a gigantic hassle, but we've devised a list of our favorite tips that we think will save you lots of time and money when it's time to move.
- It's best to avoid storing items in plastic bags, as they are less sturdy and absorb moisture.
- To aid in stacking, pack in same size boxes whenever possible.
- Clean items like clothing, blankets, drapery or furniture before packing them away to prevent germs and dirt from being transported to a new location and odors from spreading throughout your storage unit.
- Don't make boxes too heavy. Use larger boxes for light stuff and smaller ones for the heavy stuff.
- Stack your books flat, as opposed to standing them on end, which could damage the spine.
- Store your framed mirrors and artwork vertically rather than flat.
- Label your boxes clearly (on more than one side!). It's a good idea to provide yourself with a short list of inventory in addition to a general description, like "office supplies".
- Polish your wood before packing to give it extra protection from unnecessary again from the elements.
- Consider using a climate controlled storage unit for things like electronics, valuable paper materials, and furs, which often do best at colder temperatures.
- Don't fill out your storage unit entirely, so consider a larger space than you think you will need. You will want ample room to get around in addition to leaving the space properly ventilated.
